AUCTION LEAGUE STRATEGY

Auction Leagues are probably the most exciting ways to prepare your Fantasy Football Team.  You have complete control of who you want, as long as you play it strategically.  I will be making a more in-depth Auction League Draft Strategy for V.I.P. members, but here is a short preview of what is to come.

BEST VALUES

*SPEND THE MAX TO GET THESE GUYS*

QB

COLIN KAEPERNICK – QB – SF

MAX $22

AVERAGE $19

The Top QBs go for around $40-$46 in 12 Team leagues for auction drafts.  The dropoff is pretty minimal, until we look at Colin Kaepernick and his $22 Max Price.  Colin has a chance to be a Top 5 QB this season and should be more than lethal in all Fantasy Leagues.  The addition of Anquan Boldin is exactly what this scrambling QB needs, “somebody that can dominate single coverage.”  There is an outside chance Kaepernick outscores Cam Newton as the #4 QB, I would take this price instantly.

JOSH FREEMAN – QB – TB

MAX $10

AVERAGE $5

I would not spend the Max on Freeman, but if you wait long enough in your auction you can probably get him for $2.  Heading into a contract year, the Bucs offense is ready for a huge breakout season thanks to the emergence of the new and improved defense.  T.O.P was always an issue for Bucs in 2012, that will no longer be the case.  Freeman/Martin/Jackson/Williams is a dangerous combination.  Do not take Freeman lightly as I project a Top 12 Finish.

RB

MONTEE BALL – RB – DEN

MAX $18

AVERAGE $15

With RBs like Adrian Peterson costing over $70, and even LeSean McCoy at over $50.  The fact you can get Mr. 15 TD/1300 Yards Montee Ball at that price is an absolute steal.  I would pay the Max to get him on the opening bid, you will not get a much better deal than this.

AHMAD BRADSHAW – RB – IND

MAX $12

AVERAGE $11

People think Ahmad Bradshaw is over the hill or something?  He was great for the Giants in 2012, and the Colts are going to give him every opportunity to succeed in 2013.  The Colts already posses a great scoring offense that can move the chains with the best of them.  Bradshaw should be getting a lot of carries in the West Coast Offense, too much good to not snag him.

RYAN MATHEWS – RB – SD

MAX $10

AVERAGE $9

This is another steal of a deal at the RB position.  Ryan Mathews has a lot to prove, and so does this entire Chargers team heading into 2013.  Mathews was plagued by a broken collarbone in the preseason of 2012, and this season he looks to put that horrible year in the past and move forward.  He is an absolute steal at this price as 1,000 Yards and 8-10 TDs seems like it should come automatic..as long as he stays healthy.  For $10, take that risk.

WR

DANNY AMENDOLA – WR – NE

MAX $18

AVERAGE $14

You can get an automatic 1,200 Yards and 8-12 TDs for only $18.  How can you not take this deal as Tom Brady will get his numbers, and Amendola is the only WR you can really trust on this squad.  I would not hesitate at this price for a Top 10 player at the position.

DESEAN JACKSON – WR – PHI

MAX $12

AVERAGE $9

Riley Cooper is the #2 WR for the Eagles in 2013.  While the Eagles will run the ball a lot this season, that will setup the deep bombs to Desean Jackson with little coverage.  We could easily see Desean have weeks that win you your fantasy matchup by himself.  I would not hesitate at this nothing price tag to grab him.

MILES AUSTIN – WR – DAL

MAX $8

AVERAGE $7

$8 is a joke for a WR who can easily be a Top 10 player at the position.  Miles Austin is maybe the best open field running WR in the game, and coming into 2013 at full strength, he is going for way too cheap of a price.  Do not hesitate to buy the Foot Long Sub with Chips and a Drink as your #3 WR.  He can easily play like a #1.

ANQUAN BOLDIN – WR – SF

MAX $6

AVERAGE $5

The 49ers brought in Anquan Boldin to be the weapon Kaepernick needs to take his game to the next level.  All indications are these two seem like they have been playing the game forever.  Boldin had an amazing playoff run in 2012 to show he is not done, the renewal of his QB situation with Kaepernick should take him to the next level.

TE

FRED DAVIS – TE – WAS

MAX $2

AVERAGE $1

Does it get much better than this?  The answer is probably with Montee Ball.

Fred Davis at that price is basically free.  He is looking good from his torn achillies which has now been proved that all injuries can heal quicker than ever.  Fred could easily be the #1 option for RGIII this season as the TE does seem to benefit from all the running as linebackers may over commit to the run, leaving RGIII open for the pass.

  1. For people that doubt Ball

    Records[edit source | edit]NCAA single season records

Most touchdowns, season: 39 tied (2011)
Most consecutive games with two or more touchdowns: 13 (2011)
    Most points scored by non-kicker: 236 (2011)
    NCAA career records

    Most touchdowns: 83 (2009-2012)
    Most Rushing Touchdowns: 77 (2009-2012)

  2. Thanks for all your help Munt. I’m definitely going into this season with a lot more confidence knowing that I have the real inside scoop on players to target.

My bank account appreciates you man! haha

  3. I’m in a 14 team auction league….with $100 to spend on 8 players (we snake draft after everyone has 8 players).

We start 1 QB, 2RB, 3WR/TE, K, Def. Point for every 50 passing yards, passing TD’s 4….Point for every 15 yards rushing/rec…TD’s 6. It’s basically weighted toward scoring slightly.

Any players specifically you would target in this type of league? Any idea about how much you would be looking to spend on each position? Would you look to build around 1 or two specific players or just look for values at every position and try to get as many of them as possible?

I’ve been in the finals the past two years with Brees as my QB in this league…Not sure it’s wise to pony up for him this year though…as much as I want to…

  4. The point is always to try to get a well rounded team of beasts.

If you can get Gronk for cheap, GET HIM.

Target Montee Ball as your RB 2 and get a cheap backup like Lacy or Bradshaw. Don’t worry about Defense unless something great falls to you. Match your kicker with your QB. Get a well rounded team of WR’s unless you can get someone like Megatron or Brandon Marshall for less than expected. Target Moore, DeSean Jackson, Miles Austin, Boldin… Keep Munt’s rankings in mind (http://www.beastdome.com/fantasy-football-rankings-up-all-night-to-get-lucky-2013/) and go from there. If someone falls in your lap who’s high on your list, get him. Have a spending strategy.

  5. REALLY interested to see how you finish in fantasy pros rankings this season. You’ve got a lot of guys high in your rankings that got me scratching my head.

  6. Where did the ppr rankings go? Will they be up again by sunday!? That’s when my draft is. I need them.
