As we approach a month left in the regular season, the AL Rookie of the Year race has changed drastically in the last week. You can read Vol. III to see what I said last. I talked about how Luis Gil who was in second place for the award would likely fall out of the race sooner than later. Gil is gone, injured, Wells is in second place.

Colton Cowser continues to have an inflated lead for the award according to the Vegas at -650. But why?

Sure on paper Cowser has 9 More HRs and a healthy amount of RBIs, but Cowser also has 100+ more plate appearances. It is not Wells fault, catchers do not play everyday, and Austin Wells was on the wrong side of a catcher platoon early in the year. Wells should finish with nearly 110+ games, which is about what a catcher plays these days.

Regardless of that, Austin Wells is one of the most dominant defensive players in baseball.

To add even more backing, the Yankees are in 1st Place while the Orioles are slipping. Austin Wells is a big reason in the middle of the lineup and behind the plate why the Yankees are surging.

Cowser in August: 3 HR/10 RBI/.242 average

Wells in August: 2 HR/11 RBI/.320 average

AUSTIN WELLS +750 AL ROY

The odds are great for Wells. He hit a HR on Monday, he threw out a runner, he is an all-around stud. On top of it all, he is a very nice humble man and a great role model. Just listen to this interview. A hot September, a Yankee Playoff run, in November when they announce the award, Wells will win it.
